Is It Legal To Identify A Cyber Stalker With a Reverse Email Search Investigation?

As a private investigator that specializes in cyber stalking investigations and reverse email search investigations many times I'm asked if it is legal to trace an email back to the sender. I suppose this is because many people think the only way to identify the sender of an email is to hack or crack into their account or use some kind of password phishing technique. Honestly it's questions like those that make me wish clients would not assume so much and jump to wild conclusions.

A reverse email search investigation is perfectly legal. No laws are broken or even bent. Many time this kind of email trace can be accomplished with a simple data base search. The subject of the investigation has used the email before in an online transaction or profile and the email address has become available in a data base. There are many data bases of this type that are only available to licensed professionals, law enforcement and collection agencies.

Other times you can do an examination of the email headers and compare that information to known suspects in the case. Either obtaining an exact match or completely excluding that person as a suspect. You can continue this process until you narrow it down to the person you want.

Many times to can email the person and trick them into revealing who they are. You can do this is many ways that will nor arouse suspicion or adversely go out of your way to arouse their suspicion. This way they will turn around and try to investigate one of my pretext email accounts and fall into a clever trap that will ultimately reveal their identity. This type of pretext is very effective with the "computer savvy" type of cyber stalker that really believes they are untraceable on the Internet.

Another method would be to examine the headers and then trace the IP address back to the ISP, you can with subpoena the custodian of records of the ISP or if you have other resources or data bases you can often match that IP number to a name and address. Follow up investigation can attach that computer to an actual person.

The techniques mentioned above are all perfectly legal and only a fraction of the many tricks we investigators use to legally trace emails using reverse email search investigations to track down and identify cyber stalkers. In fact all of our information can be reduced to a report that can be used in court or for a police report.

What Is The First Step In Any Infidelity Investigation?

If you suspect infidelity in your relationship or you are a private investigator hired to investigate infidelity what do you think should be the first step to take to catch a cheater? I think that most savvy investigators would agree that the quickest, easiest and cheapest way to launch an infidelity investigation in an online Infidelity Investigation. That is where you trace a persons email address back to secret online personal ads and dating services. This should be every investigators first step.

Today the Internet plays a significant role in any type of dating. Whether it be an adulterous relationship or a monogamous relationship. Today one out of every five relationships began online. Either on a dating site or perhaps a social networking site like MySpace, Twitter or Facebook. So with that being the case the modern infidelity investigation should also focus on the Internet.

Not every private detective you'll find in the yellow pages will be familiar with online infidelity investigations. Their first instinct will be to offer good old fashioned surveillance. But that can cost hundreds per hour, require a huge retainer and still return unreliable results. You need facts not just conjecture.

An Internet Infidelity Investigation will uncover secret personal ads whether the suspect is heterosexual or a closeted homosexual. It will uncover ads on fetish sites, cam sites, swinger sites. It can even trace an email back to a porn site membership or participation in escort service web sites. This is considered smoking gun evidence but there's more. A secret Facebook page can have pictures, videos and chats of the suspect and their lover. many people will post pictures of themselves out on dates or at a party or vacation with their lover.

All of this can be uncovered just by searching or tracing an email. If you suspect that the cheating partner has a secret email account this also can be investigated and obtained. There really is no way for a person to hide from this type of investigation to avoid being caught red handed. In fact the PI can even contact the cheaters personal ad on a pretext and offer to exchange pictures or phone numbers. all of this is recorded and documented to a report. This is why an online investigation should be the very first step taken when trying to uncover infidelity.

How To Stop Harassing Crank Calls With A Telephone Trap Line Rental

If you are on the receiving end of harassing calls, prank calls, crank calls or hang up calls you can put a stop to it by renting a telephone trap line. It is possible to use a telephone service known as ANI or Automatic Number Identification to unblock blocked calls and get the phone number of the person calling you. But before you decide to launch your own investigation into the source of these annoying calls there are some steps you should take first.

First you should try to make a police report. Even if you think it's not serious right now it can always escalate. so better to be safe than sorry. If the police do take your complain seriously they can direct the phone company to put a trap and trace on your line to identify incoming callers.
Second you should report it to your telephone company. many local phone companies have a pay per trace service. Usually it's *57. When you activate the Call Trace code (*57) immediately following the harassing call, the caller's phone number is recorded by the phone company and will appear on your next billing statement. However not every state allows you to use *57.

If these two avenues are not the solution you can hire a private investigator that is experienced in telephone harassment investigation. The investigator will rent you a trap line and you'll forward all your incoming call to the trap. You can either have the calls ring to a second line like a cell phone and answer your calls as usual or you can have all your calls to a voice mail service that is usually included in the cost of the trap line rental.

Either way each time a call comes in you'll receive an email notification of the incoming callers phone number. Even if they have used *67 to block the call from your caller ID service. When you isolate the numbers that are harassing you, you then provide that phone number to the private investigator who will use his resources to attach a name and address to that phone number.

Once the incoming prank caller has been identified the private investigator can reduce these findings to a report. You can take that report back to the police station in order to get an arrest and prosecution. But even if that avenue fails again you should be able to go to court to get a restraining order against the person in order to stop the harassing crank calls for good.

Will A Reverse Email Search Investigation Work On A Gmail Account?

There is a lot of false information floating around about Gmail and the reverse email search. Many people seem to think that you can't identify the owner of a Gmail account using a reverse email trace report. They base this opinion on the belief that Gmail will strip the senders IP address from the headers. This is faulty thinking to say the least. First of all the IP address is not stripped from the header in every case. In fact in many cases you will be able to find the senders IP number in the header and you can traced that back to their ISP. This may also give you valuable information about the sender or at the very least the senders geographic location.

In some cases you can take that little bit of information and make a 100% accurate identification of the owner of the email address.

But let's say we need to identify the owner of a Gmail account and the headers have been stripped the IP information. All is not lost because that is only a very small part of a professional email trace report.

An experienced investigator will have access to databases with literally hundreds of millions of names and email addresses. If they investigate emails as a full time endeavor they will most likely have complied their own data base of emails on top of that.

Additionally an email investigator worth his salt will have a huge check list of online resources where people sign up for accounts using email address that have to be verified before they can open an account. Sometimes these accounts are directly connected to banking accounts or credit cards.

But even if it's a brand new email account and it was only created for the specific purpose of stalking and harassing you it's still possible to identify the Gmail account owner using good old fashioned investigative techniques. The kinds to tricks and traps that have been used for years by investigators to locate dead beats, runaways and bail jumpers. Many of these methods have been used successfully on a daily basis all over the world long before email was ever in popular use. Now with the Internet these tried and true proven methods are even more successful and even faster than ever before.

So don't believe the hype that Gmail is untraceable but don't let the cyber stalkers know that.

Don't Believe Rumors That Reverse Email Search Investigations Fail on AOL Accounts

It has not been just by sheer accident that AOL is often the chosen email addresses that are used regularly to send viscous emails containing vulgar language, horrible threats and harassment. There is actually more than just one reason why there have been many online sexual predators, cyber bullies and stalkers that have shown a tendency to use email accounts that are available through AOL. Regardless of the reasoning why these characters use emails through AOL to send messages of harassment, it is important not to believe rumors that reverse email search investigations faith on AOL accounts. This type of investigation is effective when used on AOL, Gmail, Yahoo and other email accounts.

What seems like eons ago, popular methods of signing onto the Internet were through the use of US Robotics modems and using the ever-faithful and ever-slow dial up connection through AOL. During this time it was also very common for cyber bullies, stalkers and sexual predators that lurked in the crevices of the online world that used AOL email accounts to harass, threaten and scare targeted victims on the web. The reason was simply because whenever someone used a reverse email search, instead of the email header revealing the culprit responsible for the harassment, it would instead end up with a useless trace back to the headquarters of AOL in Herndon, VA. This meant that these criminals could harass whoever they wanted without fear of being found out.

Although some people still believe this is the way an AOL email address works, it is certainly not the case. With advancements of technology and in the tools available to experienced private investigators, the use of static IP allows investigators to not only obtain the senders ISP, but their full name and geographic location can often be obtained as well.

Another reason why AOL email is often the chosen accounts used by cyber stalkers and bullies that enjoy sending scary threats to innocent victims on the web is because they believe they cannot be caught when using this type of free email accounts. Even though many of these harassers fall for this belief, a targeted victimsshould never believe the rumors that a reverse email search investigation fails on free AOL accounts. In fact, a reverse email search is the most effective solution to putting an end to online harassment and is the best way to uncover the culprit's identity.
